The Sword of the LORD is a Biblical term found several times in the Old Testament and is related to God’s judgment. In our day, there is also a religious newspaper published by the Independent Baptists entitled, Sword of the Lord. In that publication, Curtis Hutson commented on Hebrews 10:26-29. Before I move on, here is that passage:

If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? (Hebrews 10:26-29)

NOTE: The subjects of Heb. 10:26-29 had already been sanctified by the blood of the covenant that is, Jesus’ blood (Heb. 13:12), yet afterwards they sinned in such a way that no sacrifice for their sins was left! (Their sin was the unforgivable eternal sin needed to return to the synagogues.) Hence, raging fire (hell) was their future destiny. That Scriptural passage clearly disproves once saved always saved because those sanctified people didn’t stay saved. They were now going to hell again, even though they were previously saved. Baptist Curtis Hutson (former editor of the Sword of the Lord newspaper), however, will have none of that, even though it is so clearly expressed in Hebrews 10:26-29. Instead he gives his expected and faulty defense of eternal security, as feeble as it may be:

These verses [Hebrews 10:26-29] have been used by some to try to contradict the plain teaching of Scripture on the eternal security of the born-again believer …. Whichever the verses may mean, we know from many clear passages of Scripture that they do not mean one can lose his salvation after he has trusted Christ as Saviour …. And the sinner is born into the family of God, an act that cannot be reversed. (Sword of The Lord, 12-21-2012, p. 5, emphasis mine)

No Scriptural passage or number of Scriptural passages will ever dissuade certain people from their indoctrination and preconceived biases of what the Bible says. Curtis Hutson seems to be like that as he refused to believe what Hebrews 10:26-29 says in favor of an ear-tickling doctrine of demons, which is the distinctive of many Baptists.

Folks, the truth is, there are not many clear passages of Scriptures which support eternal security, as Curtis Hutson wanted us all to believe! How could there be any, since the Bible consistently teaches (as it does here with Hebrews 10:26-29) that salvation can be lost. Also, any person in the most obvious doctrinal errors could answer the same juvenile way as Curtis Hutson, if he stubbornly refuses to believe the Scriptures that refute his doctrinal errors. To simply answer that, many clear passages of Scriptures teach something else is on a par with Curtis Hutson closing his eyes to the Scriptures! Curtis Hutson refused to deal with the Hebrews 10:26-29 passage itself. He could never just accept the way it reads and at the same time remain faithful to the Independent Baptist denomination and continue being the editor of Sword of the Lord when he was alive. Curtis Hutson is hereby awarded the Skull and Crossbones Award for closing his eyes to what the Scriptures say as he cleaves to another gospel! As with James 5:19-20, Romans 11:19-23, 2 Peter 2:20-22, etc. the Bible consistently declares the believer’s conditional security, not unconditional eternal security. Hebrews 10:26-29 is not strangely different. It is, therefore, vital for the believer himself to keep his lamp burning and to hold on to what he has. God isn’t going to do those things for him.
